Digital painting of John Watson :)

Done with my wacom tablet in CS5 (haven’t painted John in AGES, or done a plain black and white, so this was really fun :D)

Another digital painting, this time of John (I was trying to match the style of my Sherlock) - the scene from ASiB where he finds out Irene is alive :)

Damn straight.
My so-far-hypothetical Sherlock & Irene story will involve this.  A lot.

I interrupt your angst to bring you Sassy John.
*Like a derpasaurus I forgot to credit my friend kal for telling me to gif this little tidbit.

Can I just say that one of my number-one, all-time, dying-of-awesome favorite things about Reichenbach is how John is so profoundly, consistently and obviously NOT impressed, intimidated or browbeaten by Mycroft?

This.  Oh, this.  This gets me almost more than anything else.  And it’s such a small thing, but…
It’s the feet.  His bare feet.  Bare feet are vulnerable, they’re private, they’re “I’m not ready.”
And John has never before been seen barefoot onscreen.  Sherlock has, lots of times, because he’s beyond such considerations.  He will leave the house barefoot without any compunctions, and we’ve seen him do it.
But not John.  John is ready for action.  John is always shod in case he has to dash out on a moment’s notice.  John is prepared.
But not now.  John is Not Ready.  He is Unprepared.
He is vulnerable.

Post Traumatic Sherlock Disorder

Okay, I haz a confuse.  Perhaps I’m thinking about this all wrong, or perhaps…I’m not.  I just want to know the thought process here.

I keep seeing people discussing how awful it was for Sherlock to experiment on John, a man with PTSD.  Sherlock’s awfulness or lack thereof isn’t the question, it’s that last part.

A man with PTSD.

Wasn’t the whole point of “A Study in Pink” that John did not have PTSD?  ”You aren’t haunted by the war, Dr. Watson.  You miss it.”  John had nightmares at the very beginning, but not because he was PTSDing.  It was because he felt worthless and useless and disabled and he was jonesing for adventure and purpose, at least that is my interpreation.  We have not seen him have a nightmare since.  Mycroft said that his therapist thought his limp was PTSD-related, and that she was wrong.  Mycroft, on the other hand, is never wrong.  :-)

John doesn’t seem to exhibit any of the usual signs of PTSD.  He isn’t hyper-viligant, he isn’t skittish, he doesn’t have flashbacks or nightmares (that we’ve seen).  He isn’t short-tempered (he’d have murdered Sherlock long ago if he were), he doesn’t seem to be having trouble sleeping, he doesn’t have anxiety about triggery situations…in fact, he seeks them out.

My interpretation of the series so far is that John does not even have PTSD and perhaps never did.  He has been in gunfights now and showed no sign of panic or anxiety or flashbacks.  He has kept his head together in stressful, triggery situations.  The man has had a gun held on him a number of times and has kept his cool every time.

As for his fear in the lab, well…that to me did not read “PTSD panic attack.”  It read “holy shit scary dog IT’S GONNA EAT ME.”  He was scared, but he still kept it together.  He dialed Sherlock, he secured himself in a cage, he was rational (albeit terrified). It was normal fear, not panic-attack fear.

Not saying that it was totally fine and wonderful for Sherlock to experiment on him, but to me, one of the reasons he did it is because he knew John could handle it.  Now Henry, he had PTSD.  And when Sherlock took him back to his triggery place, he didn’t send him alone, and he warned him beforehand. So I don’t really get the objection that John has PTSD and therefore shouldn’t have been subjected to this experiment.

Who is the MadLori?

I'm Lori. I'm 38, a scientist and a freelance writer. Fanfiction is my drug of choice. This is where I dump all my obsessive fannishness along with whatever else strikes me. At the moment the dominant fandom is Sherlock. That can change at anytime. Be warned. Eye protection should be worn in this area.

I have published one novel, a gay romantic thriller, under my pseudonym. You can buy it here or at Amazon.
