The newspaper articles seen in ASiB established John’s canon age as 37.

Martin is 40.

There’s really no reason to make him a different age than the actor who plays him. Unless…

That’s a difference of three years.

Which would enable them to give Sherlock a three-year absence,…

REICHENBACH IS GOING TO FUCKING KILL ME.

Different, less angsty theory: Canon!Watson is two years older than Holmes. Cumberbatch is 35. If they’re using his age as Sherlock’s, but want to stay true to canon, then that would explain the choice of 37 - two year age gap.

Honestly, I expected them to make both characters younger, since in the canon they met in their late 20s/early 30s.

That is a good alternative.  I’m seriously not sure if I want mine to be right or yours.

*insert ‘not sure if want’ gif here*

Honestly I seriously doubt that it is relevant. In both television and film the age of the actor rarely has any connection to the age of the character. The Raiders movies are an excellent example, where Harrison had to play a character that was one year younger in the second film when he was then 3 years older. It’s an interesting thought, but the difference of a few years is not going to be that significant. Not like with the Harry Potter movies.

Yeah, you’re probably right.  It was just a Thought I had and that’s what fandom is for, right?  Overanalyzing minor details!  WHEEEE.

Who is the MadLori?

I'm Lori. I'm 38, a scientist and a freelance writer. Fanfiction is my drug of choice. This is where I dump all my obsessive fannishness along with whatever else strikes me. At the moment the dominant fandom is Sherlock. That can change at anytime. Be warned. Eye protection should be worn in this area.

I have published one novel, a gay romantic thriller, under my pseudonym. You can buy it here or at Amazon.
